My First Rant...

I'm not one given to rants, but it's been about three weeks now, and I'm still mad...so now I've got to say something about it. Ever since I've been in the Cisco world, I've subscribed to Packet Magazine. It's a free magazine from Cisco that is just full of great stuff. In one of the more recent issues of Packet, they mentioned, "Cisco is now moving to a unified system where everything is accessible from one place, so we figured this is a good time to mention that we're going to move our magazine online...if you still want the print issues, you'll have to pay for it."

What's New in CallManager 5.X?

This post has been a long time in coming, but after Cisco Networkers 2006, I thought I'd put together the high points of the changes that are appearing in Cisco CallManager 5.X versions. Bullets always work best for me!

  • Underlying Operating System – this is, by far, the biggest change to Cisco CallManager. Cisco has moved the software to an appliance model (I'm sure some industry pressure forced this). The CallManager runs on top of the RedHat Linux operating system; however, you will have no direct access to the operating system. What does this do?
    • Easier installations & upgrades
    • Increased security and reliability
    • You can only access the CallManager via Cisco approved tools & interfaces

Finally a GUI Worth Posting About!

Anyone that has worked with Cisco for any amount of time knows that they're definitely not a GUI company. Their command line interface is beautiful, but for the folks who want a point-and-click setup, one look at CiscoWorks will cause them never to buy a piece of Cisco gear again.
