IT Manager Salaries

Over the years, I've seen many people get promoted from entry level and mid-level technical positions to lead and managerial roles. Out of curiosity, I decided to look up what an average IT Manager makes. Here's what I found (at least for the US):

I kind of expected it to be higher... Guess it doesn't necessarily pay to deal with personnel issues instead of technical issues.

I would have expected it to

I would have expected it to be higher as well!

I am an entry level tech going towards my CCNA and I make the bottom of the above pay scale (with none of the bonus/profit frills).

You are so lucky, I bet you

You are so lucky, I bet you can beat 99% IT professionals (without CCNA) now days. what company are you working for?

Non-profit Health care

Non-profit Health care industry.

may I ask if these are net or

may I ask if these are net or gross salarys?

Gross. I do get a bonus as

Gross. I do get a bonus as well as the typical company matched 401(k) and discounted health insurance.

PayScale not accurate

I have not found PayScale to be very accurate at all. I have found that this site takes from a much smaller pool of users. Salary.com on the other hand seems to be much more accurate and precise.

thank for this post Adam

I am one of those IT Managers deep in the trenches. I make even less than the lowest salary range showed in the figure and I support 10 sites for a fitness franchise, 250+ users, all by myself. When I joined the company in '07 I had a boss, he left in '08 and my salary has never been raised since then. Everyone uses the "recession" as an excuse not to do any performance reviews and of course, pay has been cut. Part of me knows I have to stay patient and focus on the CCNA which I am taking next month. When I got hired I only had my MCP and now I am MCSE and CCENT. The other part of me wants to make a case to management and be like wtf because I do everything for the company that involves IT and networking. We are even finishing migrating to a new MPLS that will save the company $$$, but nobody seems to care because I'm the only one in the IT department. I am torn bewteen what to do but I think I will just get my CCNA and move on.
This goes out to all the IT Managers in my situation out there. Stay strong and keep on studying. There is also alot of negativity out there right now on IT message boards, just ignore it!
This was a touching post so thanks Adam. Also wanted to give a shout-out to Jeremy... you rock!

This is a great topic. I

This is a great topic. I love reading about the dollars and cents in the IT field. Definitely worth going through archives since I am a little new to this blog.

Cisco4Life - I feel like we are friends just by reading your post! I too am in a similar situation. My company is not as large, we have four nationwide sites, but we have plenty of tech that runs day-to-day operations. My pay was cut a couple years back (thank-you recession), and I have always been working hard to improve the computer system and networks. Despite the cost savings, shoe string budget improvements, expanded IT services, I am not seeing much gain (appreciation) in salary. Luckily I had my pay cut reinstated after the first of the year, but only because my boss left in Dec '10. Now I am alone in the abyss - hooray. Still, I need to make a career change. I just completed ICND1 and working to nail ICND2 in April. *Thanks Jeremy for the CBT Nug series. It helps fill in the gaps from class and books!* With the CCNA on the resume I hope to find better, meaningful, and gainful employment.

Piggy backing off what Cisco4Life said, keep it up folks! Ignore the negativity. Experience, certs, and a natural drive to kick a!s pays off. I already got one nibble from a large family corporation that has a lot of potential. You can get there too!
