Hi All, I am currently studying CCNA in preparation for the exam and came accross over Jeremy's CBT nuggets. In his topic about STP, I was just wonderng, switches have a CAM table right? So even if you have a redundant link, you can prevent packet loops because as soon as the switch builts its CAM table, it should be forwarding traffic directly to the destination. So why is the need for STP if this is the case? Thanks in advance.

In one way you are right. But initially if a switch recieves a packet and if its destination is not updated yet in the cam table the switch just broadcasts the frame into all of its interfaces. Also if it is a large network with a lots of switches if there are redundant links it will definately cause loops as the there will be a chain of switches between the source and destination.
